The Autumn Burn
by L. Stewart Marsden

Do you smell that?
That smarvelous smoldering smoke
of the burning leaves of autumn?
A funeral pyre to the soft days of summer —
A beacon to woo the wild winds of winter;
A pungent spice to sprinkle
on gourds and squash and pumpkins and mincemeats?
To nestle with in woolen socks and cosy Afghan blankets?

Do you smell that?

  1. I’ve been smelling it for days,I know it wasn’t the friction smell from my shoes as they ‘wooden’ go very fast but Autumn is definitely making it’s mark on my sensory organ with singed nose hairs though I suppose it is possible I should be laying the blame at the door of those gardeners having a last burn off before the plants take the season off.
